DEBATE 9th JULY

The topic of the second day of our course was DEBATE. A  DEBATE is a formal argument where, according to an agreed set of rules, groups or individuals present opposing views about a particular issue and seek to defend their positions.
Betty helped us to distinguish between DEBATE & DSICUSSION. We thought in pairs and wrote the differences on a post-it and then we read all of them and discussed and finally we understood inductively the differences between a DEBATE and a DISCUSSION:

We will sumarize now the BENEFITS OF DEBATE:

  • It is fun!
  • Students can get involved in the topic.
  • Students learn to evaluate information critically.
  • Students prepare an argument using fact and solid research.
  • The components of debating can be appied across a range a range of curriculum areas and can help your students develop higher order skills.
  • Students develop valuable communication skills such as how to deliver a speech and how to effectivelly defend the points they make.
  • debate reinforces good listening skills!
  • It builds up pupils' confidence!
We can use the DEBATE from the lower levels giving the students the structures and vocabulary they need previously. We must give them responsibilities. They must show examples with the evidence and mention the source of the evidence. Debates are interesting and  build confidence. We can develop these SKILLS through DEBATE:

There are very interesting school debates in YouTube. Here is an example:
